How are yall's summer gardens doing so far?

  • Rating: No Rating
Fungus? Blight? Insects? Doing good? Poor? Good, I hope... It has been so wet in Caddo parish. Im not complaining, but, my tomatos are starting to turn yellow. It is too wet to even water with miracle grow. Potatos look ok so far. My seedlings I started indoors got fungus so I broke down and went to the nursery. The satsuma and peach trees are loaded as are the wild blackberries. I plan to make my years supply of jam. My plums bit the dust with th frost I guess. Learn to accept the things we can't control is the lesson here. I think dew berries are ready now and plan to look tomorrow. That ought to be fun on crutches. God help me if I see a snake!!!

I finally managed to get the garden put out between rains! The problem now is trying to keep up with weeds!
We've had so much rain that it's been too wet to get into the garden take care of it!
I hope your recovery is speedy!
It's certainly been challenging enough without having to deal with crutches!
As for the snakes, I believe I'd be arming myself with some snake shot if I couldn't get away from them. You won't be doing any gardening if one should bite you!

Did not see any snakes, but, I had that crutch ready!! Got some beautiful dew berries and made an awesome cobbler. I plan to get some more about Thursday. Weeds are killing me too. I have some old bales of straw that Im going to get my son to put out until I can get out to spray. I dont trust anyone else with that job!

Other than my neighbors cows getting into my corn patch, Sunday before last, during a frightening lightning storm, ok. I survived repairing the electric fence during the storm, and because of my barking hounds I found the cows before they had a chance to eat all of it. I use round up prior to planting, and a chemical called Post Plus to kill grass after my plants come up. It is a narrow leaf herbacide and does not hurt peas, beans, ect.
However do not use it on corn as it is basicaly a narrow leaf grass type plant. I just got my main garden planted this weekend, and I live on a hill so the water is not a problem yet. It will become a problem only when it quits raining. Tomatoes, squash, and peppers looking great.

Got any advice on controlling nut grass other than a hoe?

There is a product called "Image" that was reccomended to me by a fellow gardener. It workes mainly on nut grass and does not do much to other plants with the overspray. PG I have some if you want to try some and see if you like it. It costs about 17.00 per half gallon of concentrate. It really works if one can get it applied in dry sunny weather using two legs! Heh Heh!

Earth Mama, where did you buy the "Image" the feed store that I went to wanted $27 a pint.
Thank you for the tip about Image, as I was unaware of this chemical, and will pay the $27 a pint if I have to. I do dearly HATE Coco grass, don't have much but it spreads every time I plow.

I got mine at Home Depot Last year. Maybe Im wrong on the price, I thought I remembered 17.00. None the less, it is worth it. Maybe get a neighbor or friend to go in halves on some. I was told not to mix more than you plan to use in one day because it looses potency after mixing.

I read where it will kill broad leaf plants (supposedly weeds). The plants I'm trying to grow have broad leaves! I'd hate to have my veggies killed too.
What if it got on a tomato or other vegetable plant?

P.G., I sometimes get me an old mop, mix my heberside kinds strong and put it in an old dishwater soap bottle with which I wet the mop. Get out early while the grass is wet with dew, wet the mop with poison, and rub it thru the grass. This way you can keep it off your plants. If you hit a plant leaf, just break it off.

Okay!
The year started out too wet, now it's getting too dry!
Time to drag out the soaker hoses!
